My opinion of the new rating system.

It's a known fact that ELO like systems fail when the disparity in skill is high due to the stronger player winning much more than he is expected too.
"First everyone's rating increased by 300 points, now they've increased again. Pretty soon, everyone will start at 2700 and the best players on this site will be rated 4000. "

Well my rating actually decreased. By a LOT.

I guess they average all of the ratings together? My pool ratings were awful, but my standard and long games were about 1650. My global rating used to be 1650, now its 1538 :C
SeaTurtle, I suggest you enter actual OTB tournaments to properly measure your progress.
Yes, this is true. The ratings on lichess are lichess-specific, obviously.

I bet I'm only 1400 OTB....

I hate chess. It takes so long to get pro.
If you think losing 100 or so points is a lot, I've fallen from 2091 last night to 1844 now - so, that's what? 250 rating points.

It's averaged out across bullet, blitz and classic. As my bullet ability is much stronger than my blitz and classic, but as I've played quite a few blitz and classic games, my rating will permanently be weighed down by about 100 rating points. Brutal.
It's also averaged out across pool games, if i understood correctly.
Yesterday I was on the main page looking for a game. My rating there was about 1800. When I entered the game, my rating was suddenly above 1900, but now it seems to have changed back.

By the way, thanks again to Thibault, Cynosure, Legend, Clarkey, and everyone else who works for Lichess for bringing us this site and constantly striving to make it better. I don't just have complaints about this site, I think there are a lot of good things too and overall you've all done a great job here.
@36 don't think pool games are calculated into it, but if they are, that also explains a lot as to why my rating plummeted - given only elite players regularly play in the pools, it's hard to make any headway there at all.
Pool games DO count towards your "Standard" (formerly "Global") rating; that's the third bullet point in the blog post about the changes :)

Now, that doesn't actually do much work in explaining anyone's rating drops, because it's not like the Standard rating is an average of your other ratings.

The Standard rating is just a separate rating that changes whenever you play a game that isn't 960 or KotH, and the rating change is calculated by comparing your standard rating to your opponent's standard rating.

So yes, the average players in the pools are stronger than the average lichess player, so the pool ratings are lower.

However, your opponents will have much higher Standard ratings than pool ratings, and it is that rating that matters for Standard rating change, no matter where you're playing, pool or otherwise.
